‘Padma' means lotus and ‘Nabhi' means navel. ‘Padmanabh' literally means ‘he who has a lotus in his navel' (padmam nabhau yasya sah). 

It is believed that at the dawn of creation, 2024 Lord Vishnu was sleeping on the primordial Ekarnav ocean. From the navel of Vishnu, one lotus emerged, in which Lord Brahma, the creator of our universe, was born. Therefore, Lord Vishnu is called Padmanabha. Padmanabha Swamy is seen in a reclining (Anantha Shayanam, meaning a state of eternal sleep) posture on the Adi Shesha.
