Ammonites are probably the most widely known fossil. They usually posses a ribbed sprial-form shell. They lived in the seas and oceans between 240 to 65 million years ago. They became extint along with the dinosaurs. Ammonites belong to the group cephalopods which were predators in the sea. Ammonites are excellent index fossils. Scientist link the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to a specific geologic time periods.
