The Turoe Stone is a granite stone, carved in the Celtic La Tène style, and situated in County Galway. It stands approximately three and a half feet tall and takes its name from Turoe Hill, close by the fairy fort, Rath Feerwore, where it was originally found.
The stone was likely carved sometime in the 1st century and it's carvings are unusual in that they feature two very different styles. The top is classic Celtic, but the middle has a distinctly Greek feel, which in itself slightly changes in pattern halfway around the stone. The exact meaning of the carvings has long been lost but it is believed to have had spiritual significance.Press this stone into your palm and feel the carvings leave their mark as you dwell on the ancient mysteries of these early Irish artisans.
The sculpture is cast in gypsum plaster so it has the strength and texture 2024 of stone. Each one is unique and individually hand-painted to make a gift for generations to come.
